Crissie Hynde of The Pretenders and old friends with Morrissey, sings on the back vocals in this song.

The sample at the beginning of the song is in French and it is lifted from the 1959 film by François Truffaut "Les 400 coups" ("The 400 blows"): "Salaud Mauricet, dégueulasse, tes jours sont comptés Mauricet... Il va t'arriver du mouron Mauricet!", which roughly translates to "Bastard Mauricet, disgusting, your days are numbered Mauricet... something fatal will happen to you Mauricet!". Note also that the French pronunciation of 'Mauricet' sounds like 'Morrissey' to an English ear.

With "Shame is the name" Morrissey wants to represent young new generations, whose only reasons in life seem to get drunk or freak out, take drugs and get off all the time. Not that they're entirely wrong... after all. As it often happens in his lyrics,  Morrissey does not give his opinion on his own subjects, but he's only realizing that shame (as desire to break rules, expressed in an almost religious meaning) nowadays seems the only thing to make the world go around.

Another example of "shame" according to Morrissey? Politicians who talk nonsense, send soldiers to death in far-away wars and cut health-care funds. The bitter statement of fact is that this is what really counts, deciding the destiny of thousands of people. The shame is what makes the world go round.

The same topic, although in different shades, was the central theme of "Interesting Drug", which describes the situation of the English working-class people, especially the young ones. They are somehow justified of using drugs because oppressed by the government and society unable to assure them hopes and future.

Con "Shame is the name" (lett. "La vergogna è il nome")  Morrissey sembra voler rappresentare le nuove generazioni per le quali l'unico scopo è quello di sballare, ubriacarsi e di "stonarsi" tutto il tempo. Non che abbiano tutti i torti... dopotutto. Come spesso avviene Morrissey non esprime giudizi diretti, ma si limita a prendere atto che è il peccato (inteso come voglia di trasgressione, Morrissey usa un'accezione quasi religiosa del termine) che oggigiorno sembra muovere il mondo intero.

Altro esempio di "peccato/vergogna"? I politici che usano parole a sproposito e mandano soldati a morire nei teatri di guerra del mondo e che tagliano i fondi per le spese della sanità. Ma è questo che alla fine conta, che decide il destino di migliaia di persone. E' questo che fa girare il mondo.

Lo stesso tema, seppure con sfumature diverse, viene trattato in "Interesting Drug", nella quale gli esponenti della working-class inglese, e in particolare i giovani, vengono giustificati del fatto di usare droghe, poiché oppressi da un governo e da una società che non garantiscono alcun futuro o speranza.
