The lyrics surprise for being so dry and not very interested in the topic of a regular disco goer death. What is truly astounding is that they were written in 1987, some time before the acid-house boom and the proliferation of smileys and ecstasy and synthetic drugs in general. Therefore they have to be considerated as very predictive. The promise of 'Love, Peace and Harmony' (swapped as 'Peace, Love and Harmony' on the first vocal studio take) was something that Morrissey often reflected on, ironically concluding that achieving such aims could be possible only 'in the next world'.

Another interpretation suggest the lyrics as Morrissey's personal comment on 'gay-bashing' hate crimes of the period, where sickening lynch mobs targeted their victims as they left gay clubs. Morrissey doesn't enter into details with death and violences. He simply comments on its regularity and confirms his sarcastic and bitter refusal to 'get involved'.

The song is kind of unique because it is the only Smiths' track where Morrissey plays a musical instrument. He later commented: "I just fell on to a piano and began to bang away".

Ciò che davvero stupisce è che è stato scritto nel 1987, qualche tempo prima del boom della musica acid-house e della proliferazione di ecstasy, smiley e in generale delle droghe sintetiche. In questo devono essere considerate davvero profetiche. La promessa di 'Amore, Pace ed Armonia' (scambiate in 'Pace, Amore ed Armonia' nella prima registrazione vocale in studio) era qualcosa su cui Morrissey aveva spesso riflettutto, concludendo ironicamente che raggiungere tali obbiettivi potrebbe essere possibile soltanto 'nel prossimo mondo'.

Una diversa interpretazione suggerisce che il testo sia il commento personale di Morrissey sul fenomeno delle 'legnate ai gay', crimini commessi da gruupi di violenti ai danni di vittime all'uscita dei club omosessuali in quel periodo. Morrissey non entra nei dettagli circa le morti e le violenze ma si limita a notare quanto spesso avvengono e a ribadire la sua sarcastica ed amara 'estraneità ai fatti'.

La canzone rappresenta anche una specie di unicuum dal momento che è il solo brano degli Smiths in cui Morrissey suona uno strumento musicale. In seguitò commentò la sua performance: "Sono soltanto caduto sopra un pianoforte ed ho cominciato a sbatterci sopra le mani".
