Together with "Half A Person" and "Is It Really So Strange?", the "London" lyrics deal with England's North to South migration of young people moving from North England to London area looking for a job or success. The scene Morrissey is painting here is that of one train leaving to Euston, London (where the majority of the trains from Manchester actually stop). The inspiration probably comes out of the final scene of the film "Billy Liar" when protagonist Tom Courtenay is about to board a midnight train to the capital but is crippled with nervous disinclination.

A paragraph from Elizabeth Smart's "By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept" contains the line: '[...] because you notice the jealousy of those that stay at home.'
