The lyrics of "Ask" tell us about teenage awkwardness and clumsiness, almost certainly inspired by Morrissey's own adolescent quirk as a compulsive letter-writer. "I spent every solitary penny on postage stamps. I had this wonderful arrangement with the entire universe without actually meeting anybody, just throught the postal service. The crisis of my teenage life was when postage stamps went up from 12p to 13p. I was outraged." The protagonist turns to a shy and bashful boy inviting him to come out of his shell and ask him about anything new he wishes to try, "because if it's not Love" then the sexual desire (significantly symbolized as a bomb) will make them get closer. Also very meaningful the use of capital letters, taken on loan from Wilde, on words like Nature, Love and Bomb. Very typical Morrissey in Smiths' lyrics.

Il testo ci racconta della goffaggine e della timidezza degli adolescenti, quasi certamente ispirato dalla mania giovanile di Morrissey di scrivere lettere. "Spendevo ogni singolo penny in francobolli. Avevo questa meravigliosa organizzazione con l'intero universo senza in effetti dover incontrare nessuno, solo attraverso il servizio postale. La crisi della mia vita da adolescente fu quando i francobolli aumentarono da 12p a 13p. Ero indignato." Il protagonista si rivolge ad un ragazzo timido e riservato invitandolo ad uscire dal guscio e a chiedergli qualsiasi cosa voglia provare, perché, come vuole la grammatica della Natura, se non l'amore, sarà il desiderio sessuale (significativemente simboleggiato con una bomba) a farli avvicinare. Significativo anche l'uso delle lettere maiuscole, di Wildiana memoria, su parole come Natura, Bomba e Amore. Tipico dei testi di Morrissey ancora con gli Smiths.
