Wor(l)d of Morrissey
We're back! Welcome to the world of Morrissey's lyrics.

This site and all of the work made to keep it updated during the last 25 years are dedicated to my beloved friend MaCa65 who suddenly left this lonely planet
and me without words. Throughout the short stretch of time that we have been given to spend together as close friends, we shared many things,
thoughts, passions and some bits of Life. Back in 1983, together we discovered a band called The Smiths and together since then, we followed Morrissey's career
as one of the most influential and inspiring singer/artist/poet of our age. Maca65 has always been a strong supporter since when I first launched WoM,
so this is and will always be entirely for you, my friend. -- David

Still Ill

I decree today that life
Is simply taking and not giving
England is mine and it owes me a living
Ask me why and I'll spit in your eye1
Ask me why and I'll spit in your eye
But we cannot cling to the old dreams anymore
No, we cannot cling to those dreams

Does the body rule the mind
Or does the mind rule the body?
I don't know..

Under the iron bridge we kissed
And although I ended up with sore lips2
It just wasn't like the old dreams anymore
No, it wasn't like those days
Am I still ill?
Am I still ill?

Does the body rule the mind
Or does the mind rule the body?
I don't know..

Ask me why and I'll die
Ask me why and I'll die
And if you must go to work tomorrow
Well, if I were you I wouldn't bother
For there are brighter sides to life
And I should know because I've seen them
But not often

Under the iron bridge we kissed
And although I ended up with sore lips
It just wasn't like the old dreams anymore
No, it wasn't like those days
Am I still ill?

Oh am I still ill?

This song features many topics of Morrissey's fundamental poetics: hate and love relationship with old-fashioned England, ironic hypocondria, statement of weird boredom, solid hostility towards work, lost nostalgia for gone loves and past times.

The references to his favourite literary works are keener than before:

1 'I'd sooner spit in everybody's eye' from Act III of The lion in love by Shelagh Delaney.

2 'We walked for miles right over the iron bridge and down underneath it on the towpath... We were kissing away and touching and getting really sore lips from biting one another' from Viv Nicholson's autobiography Spend, spend, spend.

During the 2006 tour, Morrissey sings "England's a swine" instead of "England is mine", perhaps manifesting his today's feelings toward his home nation.

Ancora malato

1 'I'd sooner spit in everybody's eye' dall Atto III di The lion in love dell'autrice Shelagh Delaney.

2 'We walked for miles right over the iron bridge and down underneath it on the towpath... We were kissing away and touching and getting really sore lips from biting one another' dall'autobiografia dell'attrice Viv Nicholson Spend, spend, spend.
